Camogie

U14 Championship. Monaleen 3-3 Killeedy 4-9. Our U14s started their championship with a very good performance against a strong Killeedy side at Monaleen on Tue 21st.  We were forced into defensive mode for much of the first half but managed to keep the goals out with a great performance by Robyn McDonnell between the sticks. Killeedy did manage to pick off some very good early points and build up a lead which was always going to be difficult to overcome. We did manage to stay in touch with strong displays from Aisling Doyle (0-1) at half back, Caoimhe Lyons at half forward (2-2) and Taine Amodeo  (1-0) who scored a great goal from midfield, but Killeedy’s strength in depth told out in the end. Nonetheless some very encouraging signs and next up is Ballyagran on Tue 28th.

Monaleen camogie were honoured on Sunday 26th August in Thurles when Caoimhe Lyons captained ( first Limerick camogie captain) the Limerick U14 Camogie team at the Orla Mc Donagh All Ireland series , and were  also represented by Aisling Doyle on the team. They had great wins over favourites Dublin and then Cork before bowing out to Galway in a very close encounter.

U16s take on Ceapagh Rua on Thurs in Boher and our U12s play Cappamore on Sat 1st

Hurling

U12/11 Hurling
Our U12B team continued their league program with a previously postponed match away to Kilteely-Dromkeen on Thursday 23rd August. It was a great match with super hurling from both teams, with the result only decided in the last minute when Sean O'Kane darted down the right, and sent a low ball in to the square, which Caolan Madden flicked in for a winning goal. the final score was 6-1 to 5-3. Conor Deegan did very well at half back throughout the game, battling hard and showing the way for his team-mates.
Then on Saturday, the squad traveled to Castlecomer in Co. Kilkenny to take on the challenge of Erin's Own. This was a very enjoyable day, travelling along with the Under 10's and 9's, and while we came up against a very big and skilful Erin's Own side, Monaleen were not found short of effort, enthusiasm and skills of their own. The boys put in a brave performance for their club, but on some days, you are simply up against a better side on the day. Paul Power, Conor Coughlan and Niall Connaughton showed some classy hurling. Paul Ross performed very well with some great stickwork and also got stuck in to a number of challenges. John Toland also put in a top performance. The boys showed great character in the face of adversity, as they hurled to the end, and finished the game in good spirits. Spirits were lifted further, when the day finished with a game of football. Monaleen dominated possession and scoring here, and both teams went back to the dressing room and after-match hospitality in top form.  Teams for Kilteely/Erins Own : Cillian Toland, Conor Coughlan, Jack Canny, Lee McAllister, Niall Connaughton, Paul Power, Sean O'Kane, Tom Ryan, William Campbell. Caolan Dignam, Caolan Madden, Conor Coombs, Conor Deegan, Darragh Coleman, Evan Costelloe, Eoin Twomey, Jack Considine, John Toland, Morgan Connolly, Niall McGrath, Paul Ross

U9/U10 Hurling
: Last Saturday (Aug 25th) we ventured to Erin’s Own GAA in Castlecomer Kilkenny. The sun blessed pitches were perfect for hurling with the sod quality matching that of the best golf fairways in the country! After a thorough warm up drill we played our hosts in what were very competitive, sporting  and enjoyable games. Our U9 squad put in a splendid performance and were terribly unlucky to have lost by the narrowest of margins. Our U10 squad (with a couple of the stronger U9’s) also competed very well and won by a tidy margin. Although everyone played their hearts out there were a couple of standout performances – Ronan Lyons did trojan work in defence, Donncha O'Dálaigh took full control of his wing distributing great ball, while John Ryan, Seán O’Shea and Eric Stritch worked tirelessly to take some great scores. The full squads on the day included (U10) Ben Crowe, David Mullowney, Donncha O'Dálaigh, Gavin Hayes, Liam Dillon, Nicki O'Dwyer, Rian McBrearty, Ronan Lyons, Sean O'Shea, (U9) Andrew Clinton, Brian Canny, Darragh Connaughton, David Crehan, Eoin Dignam, Eric Stritch, John Foley, John Ryan, Mark Naughton, Rory Doyle, Shane Twomey, Thomas McCarthy, Tony Power. A special thanks to Erin’s Own for being fantastic hosts and for feeding everyone. We look forward to their return to Monaleen. A message to our players: keep practicing at home, there will be more great days away in the future! Training continues this Friday evening.

Minor Hurling. Monaleen hurlers completed the group stage of the City/East Minor Hurling championship , with a comprehensive win over Cappamore on a scoreline of 3.21 to 1.03 , and finished with 5 wins and 1 draw to be joint top with neighbours Ahane. Intermediate Hurling. On Saturday evening last in Clarina we drew with Dromin Athlaca in the Intermediate Hurling C'ship Quarter Final on a scoreline Monaleen 4:13 Dromin Athlaca 2:19. The underfoot conditions were soft in places but the rain held off for the game itself. Up against the championship favorites we started the better team and our inside forwards grabbed a couple of early goals. We maintained our dominance right up to half time and went in leading by 8 points. Athlaca upped their performance in the 2nd half and started to eat into our lead. A couple of injuries to key players mid way through the half when we were leading by four points disrupted our momentum. Athlaca grabbed a goal and a free to go into a 1 point lead with a minute to go. We maintained our composure to push forward and win a free with seconds remaining. Peter Russell scored the free to leave the sides level and facing a replay. Fergal Kenzie, Darragh Madden, Damien Cosgrave, Finbarr Nash, Eamonn O Connell, John Bartley, Donal O Keefe, David Mulhall, Peter Russell (0:8, 7f), Michael Doyle, Dan Foley (1:0), Shane Mullane (0:1), Ger Collins (1:2), Brian Geary, Luke Murphy (2:02).
