CAMOGIE

Camogie Trip to Ballyboden St Endas & the All- Ireland Camogie Finals

Some of our U11 players that played Ballyboden

SUNDAY THE 16TH The club organised a trip to Dublin to play friendly matches against the Ballyboden st Endas  and go to the All Ireland Camogie finals in Croke Park. Monaleen brought teams and  U10/11 and U13  a total of 49 players who eagerly took the field  after an ealry morning start and a long bus journey .Overall the challenge games were a great success  all round with a lot of skillful play on the day.

Our U10/11s were split into two teams and they played go games against Ballyboden U11s  In the first game,  Aoife D’Arcy showed her skills as keeper while the back four of Grace Cloheesy, Sara Sheehan, Kealin Corcoran were led by Tara Hogan and in mid field Maeve Rae and Caitlin Bonfil and Abbie Moore played their hearts out and in the forwards Lucy Johnson Ciara Mc Donnell and Ciara o Driscoll harried the defense and could not penetrate it Saoirse Lane was outstanding at half forward and Eimar Morgan played a roving roll. Lucy Johnson created a chance that was taken by Saoirse Lane only to be denied by a great touch from the Ballyboden keeper. In the second game Ballyboden got off to an early lead but persistent pressure by Monaleen lead to 3 late goals and great celebrations by the girls. A great performance by all the girls

Players:  Lucy Johnson, Aoife D’Arcy, Sara Sheehan, Saoirse Lane, and Caitlin Bonfil,, Ciara mc Donnell, Kealin Corcoran, Maeve Rae, Tara Hogan, Eimar Morgan, Abbie Moore, Ciara o Driscoll  Grace Clohessy, Caoimhe Lane, Roisin D'Arcy, Aoife Nelligan, Lucy D'Arcy, Rachel O'Dell, Francesca Kearns, Laura Burke, Zoe O'Sullivan,  Aisling Fitzgerald, Aoife Doyle, Aine Gleeson, Emma Rae, Eve O'Sullivan, Bailey McNamara

Our under 13s also played Ballyboden – this was their first match playing 15 aside full size pitch and it was a great learning experience for them only to lose out by a late goal and a point in the end. Full match report is in the notes below.

After the games the hosts Ballyboden provided the hungry players mentors and coaches with a spread that left all not able to walk to the bus. A big thank you to Adeline, Barry and Jim and all the Ballyboden parents for the time and effort in providing the food and drinks. We look forward to your trip to Limerick for the return visit.

Back onto the bus and we made the quick trip to Croke Park to watch the Intermediate and Senior Finals along with 15,000 other enthusiastic camogie supporters. Our supporters had plenty to shout about with 4 of our U16s partaking in skills competition and our U14 county players taking  part in the massive half time parade, which was a very colourful spectacle. The camogie association did a great job and put on a great show for everyone, and it was clear that clubs from all over the country had the same enjoyable experience as the Monaleen supporters

After the match we piled back onto the bus, a quick “pit stop” at Junction 14 before finally arriving back at the clubhouse. After a long day the players mentors and parents arrived back at the club house at 9.20pm to the  relief of James Johnson who was so tired he has  had to take a week off of work to recover.

A special thanks and mention for the parents who travelled on the bus and in cars to help out  Michelle McDonnell, Bernadette D’Arcy, Joe Lane and John Nelligan.  Big thank you all for the help.

Camogie U14 All-Ireland Series

Monaleen were again represented well at the All Ireland series in Dublin on Saturday last, when captained by Caoimhe Lyons at centre forward and Aisling Doyle at wing back. While defeat to Wexford by 1 point and Tipperary 2 points in the group stages meant an early trip home ,this was put in perspective when both of these teams qualified to play in the All Ireland final later that evening, and shows that Limerick camogie and Monaleen players can compete at the elite level.

Camogie U12A Championship - Murroe Boher 1-4 Monaleen 2-1

The final match in the group stages of the U12A championship was a very close encounter between 2 teams battling to finish top. Murroe started well and were deservedly 1-2 to nil at half time. 2 early points in the second half for Murroe looked to have put the game beyond the Monaleen girls. In the final 10 minutes however the game changed with a goal and a point from Emma Donahoe followed by a Aishling Kennedy goal levelling the match.

Monaleen topped the group on goal difference and now have a home draw versus Ballyagran this week.

Team: Emma Donohoe(1-1);Aine Nelligan; Laura Hogan; Sara Costello; Sarah Quinn; Katie Golden; Annie Russell; Aishling Fitzgerald; Kealin Corcoran; Ruth Heavey; Aishling Kennedy(1-0); Kerrie O Donoghue; Meave Rea; Fiona Fitzpatrick; Abby Moore; Aine Doyle.

Camogie Under 14 A Championship

U14s championship campaign came to an end with a defeat against Newcastle West on Tue 11th  This was our first year competing at this level and the girls showed great signs of improvement with each game. Newcastle West were a stronger side overall, but Monaleen deserve great credit for their battling performances in this game and throughout the championship.

Team Aisling Kennedy, Niamh Holmes, Cliodhna McCarthy, Sinead Quinn, Shalini Kujur, Aisling Doyle, Alish Wiley, Laura Griffin, Claire Kelly, Aine Doyle, Caoimhe Lyons, Aoife O Driscoll,Anna Burke,  Fiona Fitzpatrick, Robyn McDonnell, Nicola Kearns, Sinead Hanrahan.

Camogie U16 B Championship

The U16s travelled to Crecora with a team weakened by injury and illness and despite playing some skilful and tenacious hurling could not stay with the home side in the first half. The second half was much closer with Monaleen outscoring Crecora but the final score was a big win for Crecora and the Monaleen girls will have to settle for the Plate competition.

Camogie U13  Challenge

Ballyboden 4-4, Monaleen 3-3

The u13s played a great match against Ballyboden on Sunday.  Possibly after the long bus journey the Monaleen girls were a little slow to get up to the pace of the game and the defence were under pressure from the start.  Great defending from Shalini Kujur and Aine Nelligan in particular kept the Ballyboden girls at bay as best they could. A point from Claire Kelly was all Monaleen could manage in the first half leaving the score 3-1 to 0-1 at half time. The second half saw a transformed Monaleen take control with 2 goals from Aine Doyle and 1 from the player of the match Emma Donohoe along with a second Claire Kelly point put the teams level with 5 minutes to go. Ballyboden added 1-1 to come out on top. Always disappointing to lose but on this occasion the players and coaches learned a lot and everyone is looking forward to a return match in Monaleen in the near future.

Team: Emma Donohoe(1-0); Aine Nelligan; Ailish Wiley; Susan Fullen; Claire Kelly (0-3);Aoife O Driscoll; Katie Golden; Annie Russell; Aisling Fitzgerald; ; Ruth Heavey; Aisling Kennedy; Kerrie O Donoghue;Taine Amodeo ; Fiona Fitzpatrick;Susan Fullen, Anna Burke;Shalini Kujur; Aine Doyle(2-0).

 Camán and Run

At half time at the All- Ireland Camogie Final 4 of our U16’s took part in a skills competition. Encouraged by the fantastic travelling Monaleen supporters Aoife Hogan, Grainne Fullen, Eileen Russell and Niamh Doyle finished 3rd  and thoroughly enjoyed the experience .

HURLING

Minor Hurling. Monaleen and Ahane fought a thrilling draw on Monday last in Mungret , in the City East minor hurling championship final, on a scoreline Monaleen 2.13 to Ahane 1.16.  This is the second times the teams have met so far this year and they have yet to be seperated on the scorelboard, with a draw in the group stages in round 1 way back in March  , followed by 7 successive victories for both teams before mondays final. This season saw 39 different players from the U8 panel involved in some or all of the 10 U8 blitzes played over the last few months. The improvement of each and every player in the panel is clearly visible and all should be very proud of them.

Many thanks to Games Development Administrator Ger Downes and Limerick player Niall Moran for coming along to present the medals and conduct a coaching session.

U8 Hurling Training continues 6.30pm every Friday at the clubhouse pitch. This age group caters for children born in 2004 and early 2005. New players interested in playing Hurling are most welcome to join at any time. Contact details are on the Monaleen GAA website.

FOOTBALL

Our U12B footballers had a good victory over a game Kileedy team at the end of season blitz at the UL North Campus on Saturday.  They adapted very well to the windy conditions and built up a big 1st half lead with excellent scores from Jason Aylward and James Flannery while the defence, led by Mark Harty and Micheal O'Hanrahan was very steady.  They worked the ball very well against a strong breeze in the 2nd half and energetic performances from John Toland, Niall McGrath, Darragh Killeen Evan Costello and Caolan Madden kept a steady supply of ball to the forward line where Caolan Dignam, and Paul Ross ensured we were comfortable winners.

U8 Football: The U8 Footballers welcomed Mungret recently for a mini-blitz recently. 20 of our young players participated and every player showed great commitment and a high level of skill. All the hard work on honing their skills in training is certainly paying off. All 4 games played were very evenly matched and exciting. Thanks to Mungret for providing sporting and excellent opposition on the night.
