Under 10s - County Blitz Newcastle West June 10th

The annual U10 county blitz took place last Sunday in Newcastle West with over 400 girls and 25 teams participating. It was a day of great colour and excitement for the girls in addition to playing some very close camogie matches.

Starting out in a tough group against Adare, Effin & Ballagran a young and inexperienced Monaleen team played some great camogie and after some close matches progressed to the D semi final.

The Semi was one sided with Monaleen scoring 13 goals against an out classed Fenagh Kilmeedy side. The final was a closer affair against Croagh Kilfinny but 3 goals from Emma Rea were enough to ensure a well deserved 3 to 1 victory for the Monaleen girls.

Panel: Aoife Nelligan; Kerry Carey; Lucy Darcy; Susan Darcy; Aoife Doyle; Laura Burke; Aoife Doyle; Aine Gahan; Clodagh Power; Juliet Pinson; Roisin Darcy; Emma Rea; Mia O Halloran; & Ciara McDonnell.

U9s v Ahane

We ventured to Ahane GAA on Friday evening last for what turned out to be a very competitive game. Despite our recent good form, the young Ahane players proved too strong for our team on the evening. Their skills, teamwork and work-rate were a credit to their coaching staff and parents. Despite suffering a defeat our team learned a lot from the game and it was great to see a number of our players exhibit great battling spirit and team play, in particular Joseph Fitzgerald and Max Ivory. Also playing for Monaleen were Andrew Clinton, Bryan Canny, Darragh Connaughton, Darragh Murray, Darragh Quinn, Eoin Dignam, Eric Stritch, John Foley, John Ryan, Mark Naughton, Shane Twomey and Tony Power. Well done to Ahane and we look forward to our rematch in the coming months. This weekend we rejoin our U10 squad to compete in a Limerick City Blitz at home in Monaleen

Under 12s Girls Football - League Semi-Final
Monaleen 5-9 Athea 2-7

The girls took on Athea in the County B semi final in a wet and windy Adare last Friday evening. Athea won the toss and played with the help of a strong wind in the first half. They started the better and were quickly off the mark with a lovely point from distance. Only for strong defending by Fiona Fitzpatrick, Aine Nelligan and Aine Doyle the skillful Athea forwards would surely have been in for a goal. We gradually came into the game with Vicky Enright, Annie Russell and Emma Doyle working hard around the middle of the field. The teams traded scores to leave it at three points apiece half way through the first half when Annie Russell fired home a great goal after a strong run from midfield to put us ahead for the first time. With Taine Amodeo at half forward distributing the ball well we added a few more scores to reach half time 2-5 to 0-3 ahead. Turning around in the second half with the wind we got the ball in faster to our forward line where Ruth Heavey quickly converted the possession into scores leaving us 5-7 to 0-6 ahead with ten minutes to go. Athea to their credit never gave up and scored two good goals before the end but it was too little too late. Panel: C. Maletta ( capt.) F. Fitzpatrick A. Nelligan A. Doyle E. Doyle C. O' Driscoll A. Russell (2-2) V. Enright R. O' Dell (0-2) T. Amodeo (0-2) C. Bonfil E. Magner R. Heavey (3-3) S. Stritch A. Haugh A. Clancy L. Hogan L. O' Brien S. Mitchell L. Halas.

Monaleen Fun Day

The  Monaleen GAA second annual fun day was greeted by over 2,500 people from around the community and a little sunshine. A great day had by all that was opened with the Ballyhora piped band and followed by a packed scheduled of events for all ages. Great entertainment and sports events ensued for the afternoon from sack racing, penalty shootout, tug-o-war etc. The dog show was a huge attraction again this year. Great food and refreshments on offer all day and all and all a great success. Credit to the organizing committee for the huge amount of work involved in pulling off the event again this year and to all those who supported on the day. Another one to remember.
